Your Guide to Hiking the Tongariro Crossing in New Zealand

Tongariro Crossing In New Zealand

The Tongariro Crossing is one of the biggest and best day hikes in New Zealand.

Mars-like volcanic peaks and smoking craters may not be the first thing you had in mind for your trip to NZ, but the epic factor on this one is off the charts.

If these apocalyptic landscapes look like something right out of ‘Mordor’ in the Lord of the Rings movies, that’s because all of those scenes were filmed here!

Try to fit this hike into your New Zealand itinerary! This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!

History & Culture

“The mountains of Tongariro hold deep significance in Maori culture, and the area was designated New Zealand’s first national park in 1894.

In the 1990s, UNESCO recognized the park as a World Heritage Site, highlighting its exceptional natural beauty and cultural importance.

More recently, one of the park’s towering volcanic peaks, Mount Ngauruhoe, gained fame as the filming location for Mount Doom in the iconic ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies.”

🔸 Section 1: Mangatepopo to Soda Springs

“This section is flat and well-maintained. You’ll pass by volcanic rock formations and a sulfurous marsh, with early glimpses of the ‘Mount Doom’ volcano. Toward the end, you’ll encounter Soda Springs, a small waterfall you can approach closely.”

🔸 Section 2: Soda Springs to South Crater

Moderate to Difficult Ascent – 40 to 60 Minutes

Ascend the ‘Devil’s Staircase’ to reach the South Crater.

🔸 Segment 3: South Crater to Red Crater

Moderate Ascent – 1 Hour

This segment begins with a flat walk for approximately 15 minutes, followed by a steep climb of over 30 minutes to reach the Red Crater Ridge (as shown in the image above).

🔸 Segment 4: Red Crater to Blue Lake

Easy Descent/Flat Walk/Moderate Ascent – 30 to 60 Minutes

Get your camera ready and grab a snack—this is the most picturesque section of the hike! You’ll have stunning views of ‘Mount Doom’ behind you, the Red Crater to your right, and the vibrant Emerald Lakes below.

The screen on the descent to the Emerald Lakes can be quite slippery. It’s a fun stretch where you can almost slide down on your feet! Go with the flow (pun intended) and consider turning sideways for better stability.

🔸 Segment 5: Blue Lake to Ketetahi Shelter

Easy Descent – 1 Hour

After a brief ascent to the edge of the North Crater, the trail descends steadily from there. It’s a well-maintained path that remains moderate throughout, never becoming too steep.

On clear days, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the plains and Lake Rotoaira in the distance.”

The final section of the trail is the least exciting. You’ll descend steadily through the trees, and the path flattens out as you follow a sulfurous stream through the forest.
